Newsletter - Volume 9, Number 5 - October, 2021
V-8 Registry Members,
Several members have contacted me to ask about newsletters. No newsletters have been issued since April. This is the fifth one for 2021. There was simply not much to report this summer. The COVID-19 Virus continued to hamper the scheduling of events in some States and many members continued the social distancing edict. Activities started picking up as summer drew to a close. Our wish is that everyone is well and that the virus hasn't impacted your lives drastically.
MEMBERSHIP RENEWALS
Last year the V-8 Registry offered 2-year Membership Renewals for the first time and we didn't offer a Deluxe Membership with a t-shirt option. Many of you took advantage of that offer while a few elected the basic single year alternative. If you don't remember which option you chose, you can logon to the V-8 Registry website at http://www.v8registry.com/ and check your membership status on the Members Only page. The password is kelmark and it will not change until March. Under your name you will see your current membership status. ONLY members who selected the 2021 single-year option received an email indicating that their membership fee for 2022 is due by January 2022. If you did not receive a notice then you have no reason to renew your membership. Again, check your membership status on your personal page. Our plan is too have all members paid through 2022. Then we plan to again offer Deluxe Membership for 2023 with the shirt option or another merchandise item of your choice. Don't renew your membership until you check your status. If your membership is already paid through 2022 and you send in the renewal, your payment will be refunded. We are only accepting paid memberships through 2022.
We continue to offer PayPal and payments by check. Recently for the third straight year we encountered a glitch with the PayPal function. At this point, the problem seems to be corrected, but who knows. Please be patient if you are one of those affected. It's not our fault. PayPal is not the easiest group to deal with.
FACEBOOK PAGE WITH NEW MODERATOR
The V-8 Registry Facebook page is seeing some changes. Adam Knoll, one of our newer members and a guy who actively spends time on Facebook has agreed to host our Facebook page under the title of Facebook Moderator. A hardy welcome to Adam in his new role. We encourage everyone to assist Adam as he gets started and we thank Rick Andersen for his efforts with Facebook to date. Adam's goal is to increase participation on our Facebook page at 'V8 Registry'. There is another Facebook page called 'V8 Vairs' that promotes V-8 Corvairs, but it is not associated with the V-8 Registry. Yes, this is a little confusing because it looks like our name and our members post on it regularly, but now that we have a full time moderator, we hope that you will post your information on our 'official' page or contact Adam with your ideas at 304-612-8645. We have no problem with the other Corvair page, but it's not us.
Adam and I have discussed plans for future Facebook postings. Currently the plan is to feature the highest profile cars owned by our members first along with links to videos of members building their cars or participating in events (racing, shows). If you have something special that you think will engage our members in dialog, consider discussing it with Adam.
FORUM NOT FORGOTTEN
Although we are looking to place more emphasis on the V-8 Registry Facebook page, we should not overlook the V-8 Registry Forum. The Forum has been offered to members now for at least 5 years. It's the place that you can go to advertise a car, parts or ideas. You can post or view upcoming event information. Perhaps you are looking for a part or the solution to a shifting problem, the Forum is a great place to interact with other members. Use this link: https://v8registryforum.com/ to enter the Forum. If you don't remember your username and password assigned to you, Rick Andersen can remind you. If you registered your own username and password, but can't remember it, Rick can still help you get started by assigning you a new logon. Rick Andersen can be contacted at [email protected]
Currently, there are a number of members who are actively looking for project or donor Corvairs. Many of you have good Corvair bodies that you will probably never use or project cars that have sat for years gathering dust and piled high with junk. Why not sell these items on the Forum. Another member will be grateful and hopefully offer you a more than fair price for that project that you will never get around to finishing or starting. SELL IT!!! Place an ad on the Forum and help out another member. If you don't feel comfortable placing an ad and posting pictures on the Forum, you can contact me for help.
SAN DIEGO SUB-CHAPTER MEETS
The V-8 Registry currently has two sub-chapters. One is located in Oregon and another in Southern California. These groups were formed because geographically as many as 7 or more members of the V-8 Registry live within an hour's drive of each other. The group in Oregon under the chairmanship of Ethan Schoonover have met together for a meal, workshop and a car show. On August 23, thirteen members and guest of the San Diego Sub-Chapter met at Rick Andersen's shop in Bonita, CA. Mark Spies, the co-chair of the group arranged for food and drinks. Five conversions were driven to the lunch and party. A big thanks to Mark for arranging the event and for Rick's hospitality.
The V-8 Registry plans to set up additional sub-chapters where participation is possible for five or more members living near each other. If someone from the Los Angeles, CA area is interested in chairing another group, we'll help you get started.
GREAT FAN BELT TOSS ON SCHEDULE
The next event for V-8 Registry members to participate in person is the Great Fan Belt Toss in Palm Springs, CA scheduled for Saturday, October 23. Mark Spies, who co-chairs the San Diego Sub-Chapter of the V-8 Registry along with Gurdon Hornor is organizing a pizza party to start at noon during the event. Additional information is posted on our FORUM; so check that site for details. Bring your V-8 Conversion and appetite and prepare for some engaging conversation with other V-8 enthusiasts.
CORVAIR PERFORMANCE WORKSHOP NEAR DAYTON
Here's another opportunity for members in the mid-west to participate in an event for Corvair enthusiasts. Gary Funkhouser is organizing the event. Gary is the guy who hosted the first workshop nearly 20 years ago. As many as 15 V-8 Registry members have participated in past workshops. They are always educational and offer a great opportunity for camaraderie. It's been several years since the last workshop. Here's hoping that our members take this opportunity for in person fun. The workshop is scheduled for March 4th and 5th 2022 in Centerville, OH. A block of rooms has been reserved for $99 per night at the Courtyard By Marriott located in Miamisburg, OH. More details can be found on the FORUM under upcoming events. Keep these dates open. The registration fee will be about $25 and will include a lunch and breakfast. One or two V-8 Conversions will be on display and featured in one of the technical presentations.
In order for the organizers to know how many attendees to expect, you are encouraged to make you hotel reservation now and to notify me by email or text if you plan to attend. March will be here before you know it, so don't wait to the last minute.
PICTURES STILL NEEDED
If your personal page on the V-8 Registry website is still blank, it's because you haven't submitted any pictures to Rick Andersen. It's easy to submit pictures and descriptions. Simply use this link:
http://www.v8registry.com/contact-us.html
Upload your pictures from your computer file and add any narrative that you want included in the 'Comment' box. Don't text pictures to me or Rick. That just complicates the process.
NEW OFFICER POSITIONS
As previously reported, we are still looking for a few good men or ladies interested in the position of VICE-PRESIDENT. The position of Facebook Moderator was solicited and Adam Knoll volunteered. Is anyone else interested in the future of our group? You are welcome to call Rick Andersen at 253-961-5003 (CA) or John Lanning at 502-649-3290 (KY) for more details.
Until the next time, GO FAST, but Stay Safe
