Karl Edens - North Richmond, NSW Australia
I have a 65 Monza with mid mounted V8 that is also converted to right hand drive and street registered. I've owned it for over 5 years and don't know of any others in Australia that are running. I had Maguire Airforce Base stickers on front & rear bumpers, so maybe brought to Australia on deployment?
It appears to be a Tornado V8 FWD conversion looking at the bellhousing, gearbox setup and unequal length drive shafts. It appears to have been further modified by replacing the motor with a locally produced V8 and incorporating a very short driveshaft between rear of engine and gearbox instead of bolted to the bellhousing (probably due to mismatched bolt pattern). I have swing arm rear that looks like earlier model Corvair and think these come from a Nissan 300ZX due to brakes and metric fasteners. These will be replaced with stock swing arms at some point (which I possess) because car looks to have excess positive camber in droop.
Holden 308 ci V8 which has Chev bellhousing bolt pattern. Not sure of HP rating but I will be replacing it with either a small journal Chev 327 or 302 as I have these available.
It certainly is a mixed bag of parts with RHD steering rack and front disc brakes from a Holden Torana including dual remote vacuum boosters. So far the steering and brakes work nicely. Recently, I was very lucky to purchase a complete Corvair diff with PG including driveshafts to trailing arms and a complete front subframe (from a guy who here who plans to build a replica of Frank Gardiners Corvair sports sedan, which is near impossible to find in Australia. I would like to use rear with C5 diff mod if costs allow.
