V-8 Registry Newsletter, Volume 8, Number 2
Registry Members,
Who would have ever dreamed that a virus would cause such grave consequences as we are experiencing during these past weeks. This virus has literally put our lives on hold. Many of our members are over 60 and can't remember anything quite like this before. Because of our age, we are forced to take certain precautions due to our vulnerability. I question why there is so much concern this time compared to 2009/2010 when the Swine Flu arrived in the States. Most of us can't even remember it. Why now?
JACKETS MAILED TO MEMBERS
Last year merchandise was mailed in early April; so we are about a month ahead this year. All jacket and shirt requests were mailed out Thursday, March 12th. You should expect arrival by Saturday, March 14th or Monday March 16th. If you ordered a jacket and it doesn't show up by the end of next week, call me. The US Postal Service has a reputation for losing merchandise.
A limited supply of 2020 jackets and t-shirts are still available. Use the form on the V-8 Registry website.
NEW PASSWORD FOR 2020
It's March, so it's time to change the password for accessing the secure sections of our V-8 Registry website. We ask you not to share this password with non-members. We do not want to expose anyone to scammers. With over 300 phone numbers and email addresses in the wrong hands, a serious problem could result. So, for 2020 the new password goes into effect Sunday, March 15th at 11:30 PM
CORSA CONVENTION JULY 6-11 IN SAN DIEGO
As we isolate ourselves from others, this may present a good time to prepare our Corvair Conversions for the summer season, assuming that we can expect to venture out by then. The San Diego convention is still listed as a 'go' for July 6-11, 2020. The Host Committee is surely reviewing the situation. Hopefully for those that are planning to attend, your plans will not be altered by unexpected financial considerations or family issues. The V-8 Registry is still planning for an historic convention. On Tuesday evening July 7, two of our members are involved in a Technical Session devoted to the installation of Electric Power Steering (EPS) in a stock or modified Corvair. The Host Committee is excited to have Ethan Schoonover and Guy Desjardins conduct a two hour presentation on this topic. Ken Rosenbusch with ePowersteering.com will also be on site displaying a complete kit and demoing it. Guy's V-8 Conversion will be on site for attendees to view the EPS kit in full operation.
On Thursday, July 9th the V-8 Registry members will meet at Rick Andersen's home and shop in Bonita, CA a short distance from the host hotel. Here's our schedule for the day:
1:00 PM-4:00 PM Performance Workshop Rick Andersen's Shop
4:00 PM-5:00 PM V-8 Registry Annual Meeting Rick Andersen's Shop
5:00 PM-5:15 PM Presentation by Trevor Harris Rick Andersen's Shop
5:15 PM-5:30 PM Presentation by Archibald Evans Rick Andersen's Shop
5:30 PM-6:30 PM V-8 Registry Cook Out Rick Andersen's Shop
6:30 PM-9:00 PM V-8 Registry Party Rick Andersen's Shop
The cookout at Rick's home is free to members and their spouse or guest. All others will pay a fee for food and beverages.
The autocross on Friday, July 10th promises to be a wild ride. Seth Emerson, one of our members, is working with the local SCCA of San Diego on the course layout and timing. Seth has indicated that the huge parking lot at San Diego Football Stadium (Qualcomm) offers an unusual opportunity for a fast track that drivers and spectators will appreciate. The V-8 Registry has a number of high profile cars scheduled to attend. At last count we have 15 conversions with plans to run on Friday. The new Ted Trevor Award will be presented to the Corvair Conversion in either class SM-2 or SC-1 that completes the autocross with the best time. This new award was introduced last year at the convention in St. Charles, IL. This year the V-8 Registry will provide the award with our own design. From this year forward, The Ted Trevor Award will be provided and paid for by the V-8 Registry. We consider this award as a very special tribute to Ted Trevor and his contribution to 'Corvair Racing'. In addition to the award, the V-8 Registry will offer a $100 prize to the winner of the Ted Trevor Award. If that same conversion wins the fastest time of day for all cars competing in the autocross, then another $100 prize will be presented to the driver.
John and Cory Black will be at the convention with their CORVIN8ER. This conversion with Cory at the wheel has won the autocross events at the last two CORSA Conventions. Competitors will have their work cut out for them. Charlie Friend who drives the fastest Corvair on the earth at 200+ mph in Open Road Racing is planning to be in San Diego with his car. Another member, Mark Allen, is debuting his blue convertible racer that Bob Depalo is finishing up in his Red Dragon Automotive Shop. We hope to announce the names of additional high profile conversions planning to attend.
HISTORIC CROWN CARS
Two years ago in Pittsburgh, Howard Trevor drove the NO.1 Shop Car owned by his father Ted Trevor to the convention. The car had not been to a convention in years; so for many members this was their first opportunity to see the first Crown car built in 1967. Now we are pleased to announce that Ted's NO. 2 Shop Car is scheduled to be present for the San Diego Corvair convention. Both Crown cars will be on display during the convention and at our Thursday event in Bonita, CA. To make it even better, Trevor Harris will be in attendance. Trevor Harris is the engineer hired by Ted Trevor in 1967 to design the Crown subframe and to bring the Crown kits to market. He is 82 years old, but still has his business and continues to add new patents to his name. He was responsible for design work on many cars from the 60's like the Shadow Formula 1 car, Toyota Group 6 Prototype and worked for Peter Brock at BRE on Datsun 510, 240Z race cars and the Formula 500 Lotus. The list goes on from there. Trevor Harris is excited to to be part of the events that started with his design work over 50 years ago.
