V-8 Registry Newsletter, Volume 10, Number 1
V-8 Registry Members,
Well, it's 2022; so it's about time for a January newsletter. Activities during 2021 were again sparse like 2020, but there's renewed hope that this Covid Virus will end it's rein and we can all get back to a spring and summer like 2019. Allow me to wish everyone a HEALTHY & HAPPY NEW YEAR.
Having talked to a number of our members during the fall and winter, I'm aware that a number of you have been either sick with one or more viruses or other ailments. The officers wish everyone well and I would like to especially mention Seth Emerson, Paul Beck and his wife Anna. I know that there are probably others that could use a few prayers too. Best wishes for full recoveries to everyone.
CORVAIR PERFORMANCE WORKSHOP
As previously reported, the Performance Workshop is back on track for an appearance on Saturday, March 5, 2022 in Centerville, OH. Gary Funkhouser the founder of the event many years ago is planning to revive this popular activity in it's original format. The workshop is open to all Corvair enthusiast who enjoy performance upgrades, racing of all types and just hanging around other Corvair guys who like to drive fast at track events. There will be a swap meet area for displaying and selling Corvair performance parts. For those arriving Friday, March 4, the attendees can tour BWI Industries automotive parts operation on Friday afternoon. An informal dinner at a local restaurant, not yet announced, will follow. Afterwards, everyone meets in the hotel conference room for snacks, drinks, videos and racing tales among friends. On Saturday morning the door to Gary's shop opens at 8:00 AM. Coffee and donuts are provided and included in the $25 registration fee which also includes lunch. The program includes presentations by Michael LeVeque describing the Bonneville track car he built, Logan Dernachek reviews of his race car, a Koni Shock presentation and other presentations until 5:00 PM. For V-8 Registry members, the highlight of the day will be a presentation by Ellis Hubbard of Russ Brandenburg's fantastic build that he completed just before he pasted away December 8, 2020 from heart problems. Russ's car will be on display for all to enjoy. We are also hoping to have another hand-built Corvair racecar on display if the owner's schedule permits.
The host hotel is the Courtyard by Marriott in Miamisburg, OH. Call 937-433-3131 for reservations. The cost is $99 per night + tax. Mention Performance Workshop Group for discount rate. Overflow rooms will be available at the Staybridge Inn and Hilton Garden Inn. In the past the V-8 Registry turnout for these workshops has reached as high as 15 members. This is a great opportunity to meet like-minded enthusiasts in person. We hope that some of you will consider either driving or trailering your conversions to the workshop. There will be space available for unloading. For more details you can call Gary Funkhouser at 937-751-2918. Gary's shop is named Gem City Corvair Repair and it's located at 9452 Sheehan Road; Centerville, OH 45458.
If you plan to attend the workshop, please respond with a text or a brief email. My phone number is 502-649-3290. See note below for workshop details.
JULY CORSA CONVENTION
An International Corvair convention hasn't been held since we last met in St. Charles, IL back in 2019. That was a grand event and now the local Corvair clubs near Peachtree City, GA are planning a convention to remember. This central Midwest location insures that the destination will be close enough for many of our members to consider attending. The Southern Hospitality of Georgia almost certainly presumes that an all out effort will be made to make this convention a memorable one.
The convention kicks off Monday, July 11th and ends on Saturday, July 16th, 2022. The Concours is scheduled for Wednesday, July 13th and the Autocross will be held Friday, July 15th. Our V-8 Registry Annual Meeting is listed for Thursday, July 14th from 7:00-8:00 PM in the Hotel Auditorium. In addition to holding this meeting, we will host another food and beverage event exclusively for our members and one guest each. If a member living in the area would like to host such an event at their home, the V-8 Registry will cover all the expenses. Contact me for details. See attachment below for full convention schedule.
The V-8 Registry will again present the Ted Trevor Award along with $100 to the Corvair Conversion with the Fastest Time of Day in the autocross for Class SM-2 and SC-1. Another $100 prize will be awarded if a Corvair Conversion wins FTD for all classes. So, let's get those engines tuned and come prepared to entertain the spectators with our lightning fast conversions.
The convention hotel for the CORSA convention is the Crown Plaza Atlanta SW Peachtree City. Room rates are $119 per night plus taxes. Call 1-877-227-6963 for reservations and provide GROUP NAME: CORSA and GROUP CODE TU5 for the discounted rate.
If you plan to attend the convention, we ask that you respond to this email with a short reply. You may also text me or post a reply on the V-8 Registry FORUM under the topic UPCOMING EVENTS.
